Speaker covers

No big projects this between-season period of winter 19-20. Only a lot of smaller repair and improvement activities. Which is perfectly OK :).

A project slightly off the beaten track is new speaker covers. I think we were on our third set of outdoor speakers now. There has been nothing wrong with the speaker elements themselves. But the outside covers have crazed and cracked and become ugly.

Plastic expands and retracts considerably with temperature. So after the covers have been snugly screwed to the hull, they will start to work back and forth, finally cracking up the area of the screw holes. In addition, the plastic seems to become more brittle with time, so if the covers are removed for some reson and re-fastened, it is easy to overtighten the screws slightly, cracking the plastic. I have tried to use rubber backing gaskets to prevent cracking, but in vain.

Basically, I like this shape. There are other shapes, as thicker discs with a more solid area for the holes. But they have, in my view, some disadvantages. More bulky speaker covers protrude too much, and on a sailboat the ropes will easily get caught by them and possibly pull them off. You could also more easily hit them with body parts when moving around during sailing. So I believe the speaker covers should have a slim and low shape.

I could find no sets of speakers to fit my requirements. Consquently I started to think of making some myself. They would have to be solid, low profile, cheap, easily repaired and have an acceptable appearance. Easier said than done, and it took some time to find a concept.

Some small 2mm glass fiber sheets were found on eBay. They were cut to discs, then to rings, then doubled to leave space for some kind of mesh to be fastened inside.

The outside perimeter was easily sanded to a smooth finish by fastening the disc (before cutting out the inside and making a ring) to a table drilling machine. The inside was a bit more tricky to smoothen out. It was solved by making a simple jig that could be used in the same drilling machine.

With that the hardest part was finished. The rest was to spray paint, glue in some Phifertex as a mesh, and put a layer of thin fabric behind as a water spray barrier.

This is obviously before the spring washing and cleaning this year, but it shows the final product installed. I hope it will last for a while. At least it is repairable.

I chose to keep the speakers and the covers separate. To be able to mount the speakers from the inside, I had to find suitable speakers that were supported by a square mounting plate. Otherwise I could not get them through the hole and still have "ears" to get some fastening bolts through. (The inside area requires a lot of dismantling to get full access).

  1. Hello, very well done. I have visited your blog a few times since I am now also owner of a Privilege 37. She was built in 1999 and was based in Italy/Imperia. I took her to Elba at the end of February for a small refit and then brought her to Northern Germany in summer. Here I planned some modifications, like the installation of a heater, a new charger, etc. But unfortunately I cannot do anything because of the Corona crisis.
    Many greetings and stay healthy

  2. Hi, very nice to hear from another P37 owner. Are you from Germany? If so, is Germany your base for the boat? Or maybe you normally stay in the Mediterranean? To live long periods on board?

  3. Hello, yes I am from Germany. Northern Germany, between Bremen and Bremerhaven. The home port of my boat will be Germany/Hooksiel. As I said, I bought the boat in February in Imperia, northern Italy, and at the moment it's in the ESOAM shipyard on the island of Elba to completely renew the underwater hull, i.e. new antifouling. In addition to that, the windows have to be resealed and a bimini hardtop has to be made as you have it. I had planned to take the boat to Northern Germany in July but I don't think it will happen this year due to the delays caused by the Corona situation. My plan is actually to sail in the North Sea for another three or four years and then when I retire, to live on the boat completely. But then the Mediterranean and everywhere where it is warm. You can see some pictures and videos of my privilege here: https://www.catavita.de/
The name of my boat is now CALMVITA ;-)

  4. I could not get that link to function. Pity, as i really like to hear about sisterships and see pictures. Are you on Facebook?

  5. That's odd. No, I'm not on Facebook. Please try this: https://www.catavita.de

  6. It may be better to copy the address and then paste it into your browser. I use the Firefox browser and it works.

  7. OK, it worked now. Fun to see video and pictures. Equipped much like ours. But we have no generator.

  8. At that time the previous owner had a VTE Paguro generator with 3 kW output installed, which has only 70 operating hours to date. The engines also have only 1050 operating hours to date. Actually he did not use the boat much, only for swimming or fishing. The longest distance he drove it was from Imperia to Corsica. All in all the boat is almost as new inside. Ok, the wooden panelling in the salon above the sofa has unfortunately been damaged by water. Therefore this beautiful foil with the sailing ship ;-) But I have already removed the foil and a specialist explained to me that the damage can be repaired without much effort. The seal of the salon windows was renewed by the previous owner but he did not do it very well. This means that the windows have to be removed and then put back in place properly.

  9. The previous owner also has little knowledge of technology as I had noticed. He didn't need to have that either but he has enough money to have all repairs or maintenance done. But a control of the execution of the work was not possible from his side, because he has no idea. Unfortunately some work, for example the maintenance and adjustment of the J-Prop controllable pitch propellers was done without much knowledge. The propellers have much too much pitch, so that the engines do not reach their full speed. But I can adjust all this myself and it is not that bad.
I had done the inspection of the boat with a very competent surveyor, you just can't know everything and four eyes see more than two. Afterwards I bought Privilege 37 in December 2019 at a very good price. The appraiser told me that I can consider myself lucky and I am very happy that I have bought my dream boat.

  10. Sounds splendid, it must be so nice to find a boat in good shape and with limited hours on the equipment. I also noted the propellers, I thought they were fixed blade. We have folding propellers on ours. I was also very curious obout the generator, it looks like it is installed in one og the cockpit rear lockers, and i wondered how space could be found for that. But With 3kW I guess the size is managable.

The previous owner of our boat also used it carefully and fairly seldom. So the equipment was in quite good shape, he had it only for 3 years. But now it has been used a lot for 17 years :).

  11. Yes, the generator is installed in the starboard storage compartment in the aft cockpit. The original sound insulation hood has been removed and the storage compartment is equipped with sound insulation mats. But I have to renew them as well. There is nothing made for eternity. ;-)
On your boat you have implemented your improvements and ideas very well. Especially the Bimini hardtop looks very good and was certainly a lot of work as I read. Respect! Also the idea and construction to make the Bowsprit foldable upwards I think it's a great idea.

  12. Speaking of custom installing, do you know what the 2 winches in the forward area of the hulls of your boat are used for?

    SvarSlett
  13. The two winches were used for mooring. They are very strong and save you from tearing at the slippery, dirty mooring lines. As you probably know, mooring with the stern to the pier is almost standard in the Mediterranean and the winches can even be controlled by radio remote control. A nice side effect is that you can be hoisted into the mast with it. Below deck the winches are bolted to a large 12 mm aluminium plate.

    SvarSlett
  14. They must be electrical winches then. Impressive. I guess that is one of the few places on the P37 with space enough for electrical winches.

    SvarSlett
  15. Yeah, I guess so. There won't be enough room elsewhere. In the back of the cockpit, on the port side I have a electric (two speed, fast, slow) winch for the traveller and mainsheet. Is that the same with you?

    SvarSlett
  16. No, we have no electric winches. You are lucky to have 3!. The electric motors are expensive. They add some weight, but I believe it is comfortable to have them. I just upgraded the genoa winches from 44 to 48, hope that helps me a bit when the wind is strong.
